2016 Headpruned Block Syrah
Of all the things about this estate that make us shake our head and think “only at Limerick Lane,” our acre of headpruned Syrah literally proves the point. This is quite possibly the one and only acre of headpruned Syrah in all of California. And to be honest, we’re not all that surprised… it ain’t easy.
Unlike Zinfandel, whose canes are stiffer and grow upward, Syrah is like a weeping willow, with long tendrils that spread in every direction. It takes up a lot of space. Which is fine, if you’ve planned for it. It works all over France. But our narrow rows are labor intensive, to say the least. Still, we embrace the challenge because we know what this acre can do.
Our Headpruned Block produces wine with exceptionally focused fruit flavors and unparalleled clarity and purity. It strikes a seemingly impossible balance between power and elegance, creating a sort of cognitive dissonance. Like seeing a rhino on a tightrope, one’s senses seem at odds with one’s mind. It’s almost too much to process. But there’s something about this estate, and its single acre of 30-year-old headpruned Syrah, that makes the impossible possible.
